Children with ADHD and autism often thrive in coding sessions when they struggle in almost every other structured learning environment. This is not a coincidence and it is not because coding is easier. It is because coding is structured play, and structured play is the specific learning condition in which many neurodiverse children do their best work.

I teach children to code in live one to one sessions. A meaningful portion of my students are neurodiverse, some formally diagnosed with autism or ADHD, others simply learning in ways that traditional classrooms did not accommodate. The pattern I have watched repeat is consistent enough that I want to explain it properly, because most parents I speak to have never had it explained to them at all.

What structured play actually means

Structured play is an activity that has clear rules, a visible goal, immediate feedback, and room for the child to make their own choices inside those boundaries.

Most learning children encounter is one or the other. A worksheet is structure without play. Free time on a tablet is play without structure. Neither works well for a child whose brain needs both simultaneously.

Coding sits precisely in the middle. The rules are absolute and unambiguous. The computer does exactly what the code tells it to do, every single time, with no exceptions and no social interpretation required. Inside those rules, the child decides everything. What the game looks like. What the character does. What happens when the player wins. The structure is rigid. The creative space inside it is enormous.

That combination is unusual in a child’s daily life. It is also, for a lot of neurodiverse children, the exact combination they have been missing.

Why the rules matter so much

Here is something I have noticed with almost every autistic student I have taught: they relax when they understand that the rules will not change.

In a classroom, rules shift constantly. A teacher’s tone changes the meaning of a sentence. A joke is expected to be understood as a joke. An instruction has an unstated expectation attached to it. For a child who processes literal meaning first, this is exhausting. Not difficult. Exhausting. They are running a second background process at all times just to interpret what everyone else absorbs automatically.

Code does not do this. If the child writes a loop that repeats five times, it repeats five times. It does not repeat five times unless it feels differently today. It does not repeat five times but expect the child to have known it really meant four. The relationship between action and outcome is completely stable.

I have had students who barely spoke in the first two sessions become genuinely talkative by week four, not because I did anything clever, but because the environment stopped costing them energy to interpret. That energy went into the work instead.

Why immediate feedback changes everything for ADHD

For children with ADHD, the barrier is usually not comprehension. It is the gap between doing something and finding out whether it worked.

A maths worksheet is completed on Monday and returned on Thursday. By Thursday, the connection between the effort and the result has evaporated. The feedback arrives too late to be motivating and too late to be corrective.

Code runs immediately. The child changes one line, presses run, and sees the result in under a second. Wrong. Try again. Still wrong. Try again. Right. That loop can happen forty times in a single session, and each cycle delivers a small, immediate signal that the child’s own action produced a change in the world.

This matters more than it sounds. A significant part of what makes sustained attention hard is the absence of reinforcement during the task rather than at the end of it. Coding provides reinforcement continuously, in tiny doses, driven entirely by the child’s own input.

I have watched children who reportedly cannot sit still for fifteen minutes work through a debugging problem for forty minutes without looking up once. The parents are usually more surprised than I am.

The failure that is not a failure

There is one more feature of coding that I think is underrated, and it took me a while to understand why it mattered so much.

In coding, being wrong is not a failure event. It is the process. Every programmer, including professional ones, writes code that does not work and then fixes it. This is not a shameful step to be minimised. It is the actual job. Debugging is the work.

For a child who has spent years being corrected, marked down, or gently redirected in other settings, this reframing lands hard. Getting it wrong stops being a verdict on them and becomes information about the code. The error message is not a judgment. It is a clue.

I had a student who used to physically flinch when I said the word “wrong” in the first few weeks. By month three, he was saying “oh, it broke, cool, let’s see why” without any prompting from me. Nobody taught him to say that. The activity taught him.

Why live one to one matters more here than anywhere else

I want to be honest about something, because a lot of coding platforms will not tell you this.

Coding apps and recorded courses can work for some children. But for a neurodiverse child, they usually do not, and the reason is specific.

When a child gets stuck, there are many possible reasons. They might not understand the concept. They might understand the concept but have made a typing error. They might be overwhelmed by the interface. They might have understood a word differently than intended. They might be tired. They might be fine but need thirty seconds of silence before continuing.

An app cannot tell these apart. It gives the same generic hint regardless of which of those six things is actually happening. A live teacher watching the child’s screen and their face can tell within seconds which one it is, and respond to that one specifically.

For a neurodiverse learner, the gap between generic support and precise support is often the gap between continuing and giving up. This is the single strongest argument for live instruction with these students and it is why I do not recommend self paced platforms to parents of neurodiverse children, even though it would be a cheaper answer to give.

What a good session actually looks like

Parents often ask me what to expect, so here is what I aim for.

The session starts with something the child already succeeded at. Never something new. Opening with a win sets the tone and confirms that this is a place where they are competent.

The new concept is introduced through the child’s own interest, not through a curriculum sequence. If the child likes trains, we build something involving trains. If the child likes a specific game, we recreate a mechanic from that game. The concept being taught is identical. The wrapping is not.

There is a visible output every single session. Not progress toward an output. An actual thing that runs, that the child can show a parent that evening. This is non negotiable in my sessions and it is the strongest predictor of whether a child comes back willingly to the next one.

Pace is set by the child, not the plan. If a child wants to spend the entire session perfecting how their character jumps, that is a valid session. They are learning iteration, testing, and refinement, which are harder skills than the ones I had planned to teach.

Breaks happen when they are needed, not when the schedule says. In a one to one session this costs nothing. In a group class it is impossible.

What this is not

I want to be careful here because there is a lot of overclaiming in this space.

Coding is not a therapy. It is not a treatment for autism or ADHD, and anyone selling it as one should be treated with suspicion. It does not replace occupational therapy, speech therapy, or any clinical support your child receives.

It is also not universal. Some children with autism or ADHD will not enjoy coding, and that is completely fine. The children who respond best are usually the ones who show interest in how things work, who like building or arranging or organising, or who already gravitate toward games and want to know what is behind them. If your child has none of those signals, coding may not be the right fit and there is no reason to force it.

What coding reliably provides, for children it does suit, is a domain where their particular way of thinking is an asset rather than an obstacle. That is not a small thing for a child who has mostly been told the opposite.

What parents can look for

If you are considering coding for a neurodiverse child, these are the questions I would ask any provider, including us.

Is every session live with the same teacher each time? Consistency of teacher matters enormously and rotating instructors undoes most of the benefit.

Does my child build something visible in the first session? If the answer involves a curriculum ramp before anything visual happens, look elsewhere.

Can the pace be genuinely individual? Ask what happens if the child needs three sessions on something scheduled for one.

What happens on a bad day? Every neurodiverse child has sessions where nothing lands. The right answer is that the session adapts, not that the material is pushed through anyway.

Will I be told honestly if this is not working? A provider unwilling to tell you your child is not enjoying it is optimising for retention, not for your child.

Is coding good for children with autism?

For many autistic children, yes. Coding provides a rule based environment with no social ambiguity, immediate and literal feedback, and creative freedom inside fixed structure. These conditions suit a lot of autistic learners. It is not universal and it should never be presented as a treatment or therapy. The children who benefit most typically already show interest in how things work, in building, or in games.

Can a child with ADHD focus long enough to learn coding?

Frequently yes, and often for longer than parents expect. The reason is that coding delivers feedback within a second of the child taking an action, which sustains attention in a way that delayed feedback tasks like worksheets cannot. Many parents are surprised to see a child who reportedly cannot focus for fifteen minutes work through a coding problem for forty. What age should a neurodiverse child start coding?

Around seven to nine years old works well for most children using visual block based tools like Scratch. Some children are ready earlier, some later. Readiness has less to do with age than with whether the child can tolerate trial and error and shows some curiosity about how things work. A trial session is a better test than a birth date.

For most neurodiverse learners, significantly better. When a child gets stuck, there are several possible reasons: concept confusion, a typing error, sensory overwhelm, fatigue, or simply needing a pause. An app cannot distinguish between these and gives the same generic hint for all of them. A live teacher can identify the actual cause within seconds and respond to that specific issue. That difference is often what determines whether the child continues or quits.

Which programming language should a neurodiverse child start with?

Scratch is the usual starting point for children aged roughly seven to eleven because it is visual, removes syntax errors entirely, and shows results immediately. Children who find text appealing or who are older often move to Python within a few months. The right choice depends on the individual child, not their age or diagnosis.

Will coding help my child’s school performance?

Sometimes, indirectly. Coding builds sequencing, logical reasoning, persistence through error, and comfort with iteration, and these transfer to areas like maths and problem solving. But it should not be sold to you as an academic intervention. The most reliable benefits I observe are confidence, sustained attention in an area of interest, and a healthier relationship with getting things wrong.

How do I know if coding is working for my child?

The clearest signal is whether they want to show you what they built without being asked. Willingness to return to the next session, tolerance for their own mistakes, and unprompted talking about the project outside session time are all stronger indicators than any progress report.
